Eight of us stayed at this hotel for a weeks skiing in January 2009.
The rooms were fine, a double bed, balcony and bathroom. They were comfortable and clean.
Breakfast and evening meal were taken in a restaurant that the Sport hotel shares with its sister hotels, the Bradul and Poiana. The Bradul is connected by a corridor, while the Poiana is next door. Both meals were self service buffet, and while not gourmet it was of quite a good standard. Beer, wine and soft drinks were brought by the trayload for people to help themselves.
The hotel has the Champions Club bar, which has a giant screen, pool tables and for most people an all inclusive drinks allowance. The hotel also has massage, sauna, jacuzzi and internet facilities.
The hotel is located approx 100 yards from the beginners slope and gondola, although most people would use the cable car on the other side of the hill (the hotel bus will take you free of charge). The hotels have their own ski school, which was of a high standard.
The only thing about the hotel that let it down is the cost, by that I mean I liked that it was cheap, but because it was so cheap then you get the "chav" element. Although not a big problem, there were a few incidents involving British people, one where a plasterboard wall was kicked through and another where a room was trashed, both late at night and done courtesy of someone not using the all inclusive bar responsibly. This could be summarised by a Bucharest day trip on the way to the airport, while the guide was poignantly describing the events of December 1989, which clearly touched him, some chavs were more interested in having their laughing photo taken next to a sculpture of a nude statue.
If you can overlook this element, or indeed are one yourself, then you'll enjoy the hotel greatly. If you can't stand this class of people, then maybe go to the Alps.

Just back from a weeks skiing beginning february 2009. Four adults and 2 children. There was very little snow first half of week, however the nursery slope was still able to provide tuition.
The ski instruction was excellent. Each of our party had a different instructor. Each group had roughly 5 people and all loved the lessons. The second half of the week the snow arrived - most of the runs were open.
We were in the Hotel Poiana. The rooms are needing a little face lift. They were however very clean and perfectly comfortable. The power shower was a blessing at the end of a very tiring day,
Food and all inclusive drink options were good. We all enjoyed the holiday. The staff from cleaners, waiters, receptionists to the ski instructors were all very friendly and an asset to the Hotel group
the snow came just in time

This holiday was our third stay at the Hotel Sport. The food is fair, not always warm enough but can be very tasty, the rooms do need a refurb but are kept very clean. Due to the cheapness of the holiday you do come across some folk who you wouldn't normally meet but I have only met friendly people who just want a good laugh.
The ski school is the main reason we go as it has always provided great instructors who are friendly, patient and thorough. We were extremely lucky with the snow this year as it has been the worst season for lack of snow for many years, but it started just before we arrived and snowed most of the week and it was great conditions apart from the odd icey slope. We keep looking at other places but the prices do keep drawing us back to Romania
Lot better than we expected!!

THE HOTEL
The rooms were basic, but very clean, the bathroom, again clean, but in need of a little tlc - no safety deposit box, which was disappointing, but you can leave valuables at reception.
The food was all served at the Bradul, you are allocated a table on the first night which you keep all week, do not be surprised if you are seated with others, but you spend all week with the same people who you fly with. We had no complaints about the food, there was plenty of it. Soup, salad bar and a choice of main courses and puddings, all fresh (we had thought we may need to eat out, but never needed to).
Free Wi-fi access in public areas.
There are planned refurbishments in 2010 and leisure facilities in 2011 to coincide with the Junior Winter Olympics.
The downside is that in the bar and restaurant they play music, loudly all of the time. When you want to relax and have a hat at afternoon tea, the music is boom, boom, boom dance music and as they want you to leave the restaurant they turn the music up!
Another downside is that you can only get 'free' tea and coffee during breakfast and afternoon tea, otherwise you pay for it - I would recommend taking a kettle for your room.
SKIING/SNOWBOARDING
The Ski School is excellent, lots of great instructors who are really patient, laugh at you accasionally, deal with you quicly and efficiently when collecting your hire gear.
3 x 2 hr sessions for boarders, 6 x 4 hr sessions for skiiers or the offer of a guide for the more experienced. Private lessons were £20 per hour. Very highly recommended.
Only downside we thought was that skiiers were looked after better than the boarders. the instructors met them at night, showed them Brasov and gave them certificates at the end of the week. Even at the ski school party ,kiiers got more presedence with the video.
our friends are experienced skiiers and went straight up the mountain, they found the runs quite challenging and not particulalry a beginners resort in that way, however the nursery slope is fine. Markings aren't good in terms of naming the runs or level of difficulty.
For chocolate lovers the hot chocolate is a must, it is melted chocolate with cream on top.
WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS RESORT TO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO LEARN TO SKI OR SNOWBOARD
A great little find
We booked a ski holiday with Neilson and as our first choice hotel wasn't available we accepted the Poiana even though there were no previous reviews on Trip Advisor, which concerned me more than a little. However our worries were unfounded. This is a great little hotel, we had booked a triple room and were allocated room 505 which was a junior suite, not luxurious by suite standards but for the price we paid it was more than fine. Breakfast is served in the Poiana which consisted of cereals, toast & croissants or a choice of about 5 or 6 hot things, always fresh and the buffet is constantly refilled as things get taken. There is juice or a choice of teas or coffee to drink, again always plentiful. The evening meal is taken in the hotel Sport which is about 50 m walk, I wondered if this would become annoying but it didn't even though it snowed a few evenings we were there. With Neilson the holiday is all inclusive and the AI bar is in the Hotel Bradul, which is again a 50 m walk down the road (same location as the Sport) but it wasn't a problem and it was great meeting the people in the bar that you'd been chatting to in the lift queues earlier that day. Drinks in the AI are good and never seem to run out (unlike some summer AI destinations) and the afternoon tea & cake is ok if a little repetitive, but maybe Romanians don't go a bundle on cake.
We took the local bus into Brasov one day, which is not really very impressive apart from some of the buildings. It cost a few pence, ran to schedule and took about 30 minutes. The shops in Brasov are pretty naff to say the least and don't go looking for bargains in ski equipment or clothing as there are none to be had, but before you go as it'll most probably be cheaper. We found the Irish bar though and this was great. Food there is cheap (as everywhere) and was exceptionally good - try the tacos if you want a change from the local food, they are lovely. And the owner, a singing irish doctor no less, is very charming and happy to sit and chat. Just ask him about his days on The Love Boat and you'll pass the time away!
Poiana Brasov itself isn't really a town as such, just a few hotels, a small local market selling a few souveniers and animal skins, a couple of restaurants and a couple of bars. Try Wednesday evening at the Rossignol pub as it is karaoke night, most of the instructors are happy to go with you and it's a great evening.
The ski school in Poiana Brasov is excellent, the instructors speak almost perfect English and I would consider them better than most I have seen in the main European resorts.
In closing, don't go to Poiana Brasov if you are looking for excellent food, hundreds of km's of piste, high class shops and lots of evening entertainment, but if you are looking for simple fun in great company then it might just be for you. We loved it and will probably be booking very soon for Jan 2010.
If you want to know anything about the hotel or the resort please feel free to contact me.
Ski Trip 09
booked holiday for 4. x2 beginners, x1 intermediate and x1 advanced intermediate. hotel was great! all inclusive. rooms are basic but have everything you need and are comfortable. breakfast was excellent, wide variety of food and drinks. evening meals weren't great! but the food was being cooked for 100 or so people so is forgiveable. the restaurant where you have to pay was great, food was delisious but best thing to do is to eat out. everything is so cheap. the instructors supplied by the hotal were excellent although maybe a little cautious sometimes. over all the hotal, all the staff and most of all the location was great and would recommend to any one going on their holidays with beginners.
Loved the Scenary
Jan 3, 2009
first time skier of a group of 17 ages between 5 to 52, had great xmas there could not fault anything ski instructor fantastic bogdan and radu all very pateince definately go back derek very helpful
Fantastic
Already booked to go again this time in january for my 40th. Started going 4 years ago with just the family of 4 had such a great time even though I ended up at the hospital (katti well looked after me). When we can back we rebooked with my parents for the following year so went as 6. Again fantastic everyone loved it ski school so patient and it was great to see everyone from the year before. As the years have gone on so has the size of my group, going up to 20 then 29 this year to a whopping 39 for 2009. Everyone comes back and asks if we mind if some of there friends can join us. BRILL.
My husband has coeliac disease so just speaks to the head waiter on a night to sort his food out. A must is the party night away to let your hair down and have a laugh with all the instructors.
Getting ready to pay rest of the holiday money so know that if wont be long before we are back where everyone is so friendly.
One thing to say remember to take your kettle etc as not one in the room unless they are putting them in with the refubishments.
Fantastic Value Skiing
We were deciding between here and Casale Chalet in Andorra as both had great reviews and wern't too expensive.
It had been 7 years since my other half had skiied and we didn't want to spend to much just to 'get back into it'.
After visiting Bulgaria for skiing with my friends last year I was worried that the food would be equally as bad as there. However apart from the odd desserts I can't fault the food, especially on the cost! Eating lunch out, the steak sandwiches were fantastic! and (as well as the 'expensive' trip to Bran) we only spent £60 each for the week!
The skiing was amazing, especially the views, and our instructor AARON was great (and far fitter than me even at his 70 years of age!) The ques to get on the lift were minimal, a raretity in bigger resorts. All in all a wonderful holiday and worth the £300/£400 for All Inclusive without a doubt.
Make sure you go into Brasov, is very cheap on the bus and lovely for a day/afternoon out.
(We booked with Airtours)
